Don't get me wrong, I saw them with Flow at the GAMH and we had a great time. They over priced but they tackled 5-11-72 so I can't complain. And I'm going to see them when they come up here to Anchorage.
BUT to listen to them at any other point than live in person seems really braindamaged to me.

what never ceases to amaze me is that joyboar ( or whatever ) dude who writes those hillarious GD reviews like he's taking some creative writing night class at some Junior College - dude gives only lukewarm reviews to every show ( of course he only reviews late 80's but still there's a lot worse years )but then gives GOOD reviews to DSO

That really is an amazing number of downloads. I can't really even understand the attraction of going to see a band like DSO live - I might be thinking 'yes, this is good' - but I'm pretty sure I'd also be thinking 'but it's just an imitation it's not the real thing'.
Cover bands who really don't bring anything new to the party hold little interest for me. I'd say the only post-GD outfit to really pick up the ball and try to run with it were the various incarnations of Phil and Friends. I think sometimes that Phil is the only one who really recognizes that the Dead's body of work is a legacy to be built on, not a carved in stone pseudo-religious artifact to be worshipped.

I agree, I personally really find the whole DSO type thing strange. I wouldn't even go. But it really is a generational thing. The folks who didn't see the Grateful Dead live just don't know what we are on about. They're not wrong, they've just had completely different experiences. I mean, if it's worth DOING (DSO et al.), then surely it's also worth downloading, listening to etc., for some people. It would be equally strange if people went to hear them live but never wanted to listen to them any other time!
Really I can't wrap my mind around it, the whole thing is strange, but the phenomenon of the Grateful Dead was strange, too, so the strangeness continues.
Anyway, I woke up this morning to find I was a disguised squirrel :)

I gotta disagree with you. I held off from going to see DSO for about 4 years, digging in my heels with the "They aren't the Dead and nobody can be Jerry" internal debate.
I was wrong and when I finally went to see them I was very pleasantly surprised.
You should at least take in one show - understanding of course that they are not the Dead. I think you might also be surprised.

I'm gonna second that. Ringolevio, go see for yourself. I bet you will love DSO.
And you know, I was telling you last summer (OK, a bunch of us were) that you needed to check out Furthur when they came to the Mann Center. You did and you were glad you did....
edit: Ringo, I felt EXACTLY the same way you did before I went and saw them. It struck me as about as cheesy as it gets....way too out of touch with reality. But then I went and man!

I know there are all kinds of tribute bands around who are very popular (Bootleg Beatles, Counterfeit Stones, Australian Pink Floyd and so on) and I guess their popularity stems from the fact that they provide a reasonable facsimile of the originals at smaller venues and for a lot less money than you'd pay to see the real thing (providing, of course that the real thing was still active). It's a bit like hanging a reproduction of a painting on your wall because you'll never get your hands on the real thing - at least it gives you something to look at. Of course, if you did have the real thing and someone attempted a sneaky substitution, you'd know, and you wouldn't be too happy with the switch.

I saw The Musical Box do Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. They have the original sets/costumes and have the stamp of approval from Gabriel as well as his input. It was a great night and I thoroughly enjoyed it - but I knew it was not the real thing. In that case, I didn't have the personal frame of reference since I've only seen Gabriel as a solo artist (once with a hey to newly recovered Jerry and Bill G. in the stands).
I also took my wife and daughter to see The Works - the band that recreates Queen. Again, no frame of reference but it was fun seeing my 9-year old sing "fat bottom girls".

related, i'd see Deer Tick performing as Deervana (doing ALL Nirvana songs), not because i like Nirvana (can't stand the band), but because i love Deer Tick
i saw a local blues band not all that long ago, excellent by the way, in which half the songs were covers, including i think 4 Hendrix compositions ... do i snip out the covers from the recording, including the Hendrix, because it's not the actual original band?
i think we're talking entirely different animals if it's an actual 'tribute' band (a la DSO, etc., etc.), than an established original act/band deciding to pay tribute to a band/performer they admire/respect, etc., as in Chuck Prophet performing as Spanish Bombs and paying homage to The Clash, which elbow linked recently; i imagine the folks who attended those shows in the UK were primarily CP fans, rather than Clash fans who had no idea who CP was

Agreed. The bands I saw were full on tribute bands. No originals - trying to recreate the "experience" for fans of the original.

oh that was good the los lobos cover (that's a band i haven't seen in eons), altho i think i'd like Plant even if he was covering the Partridge Family; what vocal muscle he's lost over the years, he's made up for with style

I don't think it's strange, well yeah I guess it is the whole recreate the entire show thing, and Eaton kind of pretending he's Weir is weird, and actually charging 35 is weird, but other than that... to me it's a matter of why wouldn't I rather be hearing some great tunes when I can stay home and watch TV anytime? Plus I never got to see a 70's show so what the hell?

Hey Ring, If you ever get a chance go see Splintered Sunlight. They play Philly, Asbury Park, Wilmington and Baltimore quite a bit. Butch Sochorow, son of Mongolian immigrants, is the best Jerry clone you will ever hear; both in voice and guitar. In fact they will be playing the Furthur after party at the Blockley less than 3 miles away Saturday night.

I think the question under debate is why you would actually want a Jerry clone, however good. Faithful reproduction in any art form is ultimately a sterile exercise in paint-by-numbers; better to build on and reinterpret the achievements of the past and produce something new.

Good point Rob and I have no good answer for you as to why I do go see DSO once in a while, myb nostalgia for the real thing who knows but I do enjoy it. I am seeing Furthur this Thursday at the Comcast in MA, I will check out who is listening to the real GD or DSO or a Furthur show. I know our car will be listening to some 71-72 Dead before the show trying not to melt (gonna be close to 100 degrees Thursday) and my fat ass does not like the heat but it is a night out with some good friends so what the fuck! I think I just answered my question as to why I go to DSO, my friends and I try to catch 5-6 concerts a year, DSO just falls sometimes into our wheelhouse and that is why I go hangout with friends and have a good night out

Rob - sorry to "facebook" or rather "Linkedin" here in the forum but I cannot find your email address. I have difficulties with Linkedin. I haven't been able to figure out why. I continually have to apologize to people who send me Linkedin requests so they don't think I'm blowing them off. If I ever figure it out I will certainly accept your friend request :) It is strange though that it somehow linked to my work address, I can't figure out how that happened unless maybe some time I wrote to you from my work address.
Is it possible we actually have work contacts in common? It's a small world.
